I've heard that having diabetes increases ones susceptibility to urinary
tract infections. Why is that?

Narouz began to feel the tuggings of the Underworld, the five wild dogs
of the sense pulling ever more heavily upon the leash. He opposed to
them the forces of his mighty will, playing for time, waiting for the
only human revelation he could expect--voice and odour of a girl who
had become embalmed by his senses, entombed like some precious image.

Glucose feeds the bugs. Having your blood glucose too high is bad for
any kind of infection; if it's high enough to spill through your
kidneys, you can pretty well guarantee UTIs.

Last few readings, all mmol/L: 4.7, 5.4, 3.4, 7.9, 5.7, 5.5, 6.4, 6.6,
... all pretty much of a muchness. Meanwhile I get mild UTI's quite
often and don't recall getting any in my pre-diabetes days.

When are the readings taken, Frederick? If you're going high after
meals, or in the night, you still get the problem.

Just before meals and just before retiring. Writing B, L, D for just
before breakfast, lunch and dinner respectively, and R for just before
retiring, the data are in temporal order:

16 June: R 6.6
17 June: B 6.4
L not measured
D 4.5
R 5.7
18 June: B 7.9
L 3.4
D 5.4
R not measured
19 June: B 4.7
L 5.2
D not measured
R 4.4
20 June B 3.9

The data I gave originally were in reverse order, one of them was
wrongly transcribed, and this list has more recent data.

Yup, pretty pointless from the POV of keeping your bg normal. Those
reading times are for your doc to see whether your diabetes is
progressing, not for you to keep things under control. Try this for a
couple of days and see what's happening:
